Heat visit MSG, fans will bow no more to the King – AP

Mike D’Antoni saw the way LeBron James tore apart the Cavaliers when faced with a hostile crowd in Cleveland. The fans at Madison Square Garden probably won’t let that stop them from telling James how they feel about the star bypassing the Knicks for the Miami Heat.

The Heat are coming to New York on Friday, another huge game for the Knicks and their chance to show they have recovered just fine from a painful free agency snub.
They went after James and Dwyane Wade, who wanted to play together, but not in New York. They also talked to Chris Bosh.

But the Knicks gained the best power forward available when they landed Amare Stoudemire. He has a franchise-record streak of nine straight 30-point games heading into the game against the Heat.

Paul Pierce made a tiebreaking jumper with 0.4 seconds left, Amare Stoudemire’s 3-pointer at the buzzer was ruled too late, and the Boston Celtics pulled out a thrilling 118-116 victory over the New York Knicks on Wednesday night for their 11th straight win.

The Knicks had their eight-game winning streak snapped when a video replay of Stoudemire’s shot showed the ball was clearly still in his hands as time expired.

Pierce scored 32 points for the Celtics, who trailed most of the fourth quarter before running their record to 20-4, best in the Eastern Conference.

Stoudemire had 39 points, extending his franchise-record streak to nine straight 30-point games. But the Knicks were denied the victory over a top team they desperately craved to punctuate their return to relevance.

Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose is listed as day-to-day after suffering multiple injuries in a win over the Indiana Pacers. Rose has a sprained right wrist, a bruised right elbow and a sore right hip after Monday’s game. He will be in Toronto for Wednesday’s game against the Raptors.

Coach Tom Thibodeau said that he anticipates Rose will play, but if he can’t C.J. Watson will start at point guard.

Rose, a right-hander, did not participate in Tuesday’s practice beyond taking a few left-handed shots in front of reporters.

X-rays on the wrist were negative. Rose said the hip was actually more sore than the wrist or elbow.

Mariano Rivera and the New York Yankees have finalized their $30 million, two-year contract.

The 41-year-old closer receives $15 million in each of the next two seasons, with $1.5 million each year deferred with no interest. The deferred money will be paid in $1 million annual installments starting in 2013.

Rivera was 3-3 with a 1.80 ERA and 33 saves in 38 chances this year. The 11-time All-Star has 559 regular-season career saves, second to Trevor Hoffman’s 601, and a record 42 in the postseason.

Lee gives Phillies a potentially historic rotation – AP

Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels — and Cliff Lee. Yes, Cliff Lee.

The Philadelphia Phillies have assembled quite an impressive starting rotation that could eventually go down as one of the best in baseball history. The stunning addition of Lee gives the Phillies four aces in an era when most teams would be happy to have just one.

Lee spurned more lucrative offers from the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers to return to Philadelphia. The free-agent pitcher passed up an extra $30 million from the Yankees and reached a preliminary agreement on a $120 million, five-year contract with the Phillies, two people familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.

In a prime time for point guards, Rose stands out

The NBA has a history of being a big man’s league. The early domination of players of like George Mikan, Bob Pettit, Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain made it impossible for any team in the league to succeed with out size. The trend continued into the 1990s when players like Shaquille O’Neal, Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning became anchors for their respective teams.

The 90s were also dominated by big shooting guards. Micheal Jordan, Mitch Richmond and Allan Houston used their strength to create space and dominate their opponents. As time has progressed, the game has gotten bigger and faster.

The new trend in the NBA over the last decade has been the development of superstar point guards. The recognition for these smaller floor generals started when Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash won back to back MVPs in 2005 and 2006.

As point guard greats like Nash and Jason Kidd have gotten older, young guns like Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Russell Westbrook and Derrick Rose have entered the peak of their careers.

The player who has made the biggest jump this season has been Chicago Bulls superstar Derrick Rose. Rose is averaging a career high 25 points and 8 assists per game. The biggest addition to Rose’s game has been a reliable jump shot. Rose is shooting 40% from the three point line and hit five threes against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday. The addition of free agent forward Carlos Boozer to the Bulls has helped Rose get, take, and make more jump shots. The form and consistency on Rose’s jump shot shows the commitment he made to getting better in the off-season.

Rose’s development instantly makes the Bulls a threat to the Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics, the superstar heavy Miami Heat, and the Superman powered Orlando Magic. Plus, he can still do this…
