Authorities arrest 1 more in FAMU hazing case

Authorities in Florida have taken into custody another of the 13 people connected to the hazing death of a Florida A&M University student.

Bryan Jones turned himself in Wednesday night in Hillsborough County. He was released after posting a $15,000 bond.

Meanwhile, a Leon County judge refused Thursday to let another suspect, Caleb Jackson, leave jail because he’s already on probation for battery. Jasmine Alexander, who said she’s the mother of a 3-year-old with Jackson and engaged to him, pleaded with the judge, saying Jackson is the only source of income for their family.

Rikki Wills, another defendant arrested in Leon County, was allowed to leave jail Wednesday night after posting $15,000 bond.

Eleven defendants are being charged with hazing resulting in death, a felony. Two others face misdemeanor charges.

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera has been arrested on drunken driving charges in Florida.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office says the 27-year-old’s car engine was smoking alongside a road late Wednesday when a deputy spotted the vehicle.
According to the arrest report, Cabrera smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and took a swig from a bottle of scotch in front of a deputy.

Police say Cabrera repeatedly refused to cooperate, saying, “Do you know who I am, you don’t know anything about my problems.”
In 2009, the All-Star first baseman got into a fight with his wife after a night of drinking, right before his team surrendered the American League Central Division title to the Twins.
Cabrera posted $1,350 bond and was released Thursday.

Florida football coach Meyer resigns – AP

Florida coach Urban Meyer says he is leaving one of the premier jobs in college football for the second time to spend more time with his family.
In a news conference on the Gainesville, Fla., campus, Meyer says he wants to prioritize being a husband and father.

The 46-year-old coach led Florida to two national titles but briefly resigned last December, citing health concerns, but returned the next day. He had been hospitalized with chest pains after the Gators lost to Alabama in last season’s Southeastern Conference championship game.

This time, he says, it’s completely different.

Florida finished 7-5, the worst record of Meyer’s 10-year head coaching career, which began at Bowling Green.

Judge: Banton can perform while awaiting retrial – AP

Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton will perform a concert to raise money for his security and other expenses while he awaits retrial on federal drug charges in Florida.
As a condition of his release from jail last month, Banton must remain in his home under electronic monitoring and pay a private security team to ensure that he does not flee the country.

U.S. District Judge James Moody said Wednesday that Banton is allowed to perform so long as he follows security measures filed with the court. The concert is scheduled Jan. 16 in Miami.

Banton is accused of conspiring to buy cocaine from an undercover officer. He’s been nominated for a Grammy for the album “Before the Dawn,” released in September just after Moody declared a mistrial because jurors deadlocked.
