NYC estimates teacher layoffs – AP
New York City’s Education Department has released a list estimating the number of teachers that could face layoffs if the state doesn’t provide additional funds and seniority rules aren’t changed.
The New York Times says the layoffs could affect 80 percent of all public schools. It says most schools could lose one to five teachers.
The department made the list public on Sunday as the state Senate prepares to vote on a bill that would allow the layoff of New York City teachers based on performance rather than seniority.
The list does not reflect the number of teaching positions each school could lose, only the number of teachers who could be laid off.
City teachers union President Michael Mulgrew called the list “a political maneuver to create panic.”

Whoopi: Lack of black Oscar nominees not a trend
Whoopi Goldberg says the lack of black nominees in the major categories at this year’s Academy Awards doesn’t reflect a trend in the film industry.
Speaking at an exhibit of Oscar statues Wednesday at New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, Goldberg underscored that five black actors have won Academy Awards since 2002.
Goldberg recently said on “The View” that she was upset about an article in The New York Times citing the lack of black nominees this year because it didn’t mention her supporting actress Oscar for 1990′s “Ghost.” The Times later said she read the story “incorrectly.” She apologized for calling the reporting sloppy.
She said Wednesday that it’s inaccurate to think there’s “something wrong” with the way blacks are represented at the Oscars.
